Pentax K1000 vs Canon AE1: Which One Is Better?

The AE-1 has a plastic with a metallic finish plate and has proven to hold up well. However, these cameras are beginning to show their age. 

Availability of parts 

There are no more parts being produced for either camera. Typically, spare parts come from broken cameras. Finding the parts is not the main issue, you will also need to find some to perform the repairs. 

Lens selection 

There are more choices for the Pentax K-mount lenses—the modified version is still in use with Pentax DSLRs. Hence, it is much easier to find specialty lenses like macro or wide angle. However, with this availability came an increase in price. The lenses are therefore much more expensive compared to the FD mount lenses for the Canon AE-1. 

Usability and ergonomics 

Both these cameras are identical in size and weight. The major difference is the battery door that is located on the Canon AE-1.

Both cameras are highly recommended. However, the Pentax k1000 takes the lead for many reasons. For starters, it is not as old as its counterpart. This means that it has some ‘advanced’ features such as it does not rely on the battery to operate. Moreover, it is slightly cheaper making it the better option.
